New print "Rainy Day" and process

Posted Apr 26, 12:18 AM

On Saturday I started working on an idea for a new print. This is what I came up with:

Rainy Day

Making the separations

Rainy DayIt was kind of rainy and dreary all day so I was thinking about the weather and started to cut out water drop shapes and kind of started arranging them into what looked like a storm to me.

On Friday I had coated 5 screens, so if i was going to make a print out of these shapes I had 5 separations I could work with. This was kind of an experiment anyway, so I thought why not use a bunch of layers.

Each screen was exposed using the water drop shapes I had cut out earlier and then arranging them on the glass until they looked “right”. I was kind of keeping a mental note of what the previous layer looked like as I placed the shapes on the glass before setting the screen on them to expose it.

Color 1

So I decided to try and use up some of what I already had from previous prints.

Color 2

Share photos on twitter with Twitpic A little darker, I was thinking I would build up the colors from lightest to darkest. It’s starting to get interesting.

Color 3

Share photos on twitter with Twitpic F U DARK BLUE!!! The blue I used, and I should have known this would happen, was too sticky. What started to happen was after ever other pull the large blue field at the top, the “cloud” was sticking to the screen after I pulled the color, leaving a nasty mark on each print in that area. I did plan to stop at three colors, but now I had to fix the mess.

Color 4, and now it’s done.

Share photos on twitter with Twitpic To fix color number 3 I use some transparency film and created a sqiggle to try and fix the weird printing issue. I used sharpies on the transparency because I wanted to know if they would be dark enough on the film to be used for burning a screen, and to my surprise, they were.

I think after problem I had with color number 3 I have to build a vacuum table sometime this summer. I’ve been meaning to make one for some time and keep putting it off. Now might finally be the time.

Wood Stack

Wood Stack - full

I’m design and prepping some newish prints to be ready to be printed when I can get out in the garage and print again. This one is kind of Bemidji / woody inspired, but kind of not. Wood stack in outer space.

Wood Stack - detail

More later. I really need to finish the coloring book I’ve been working on for the better part of the winter before too long too. I’m about 15 pages away from finishing it; a 100 page coloring book, each page a sqiggle.

In an effort to move some of my older work out and make room for new things in 2010, I’m having weekly specials on various prints and poster. This week you can get either my Hank III or Ghost Face Killa posters at $5 each. I’ll be changing it up every Tuesday.

Spaghetti & Meatball Man

spagetti-man

I don’t know where this guy came from, but yesterday I was drawing some of my Sqiggles and I got the idea to make this character. I actually started to doodle two characters, this one and a BLT monster. Now that I have a scroll saw in my garage (a gift from my parents) I was thinking of printing characters like this and then band sawing them out as wall art. More late.
