I’m getting back into the groove from a marathon weekend before, during, and after Craftstravaganza 2010. Starting off with the blown out tire on I94, the weekend was nowhere boring.
For those of you who came to the show on Saturday, you might have seen me drawing a big withremote sign behind my booth most of the day. I wanted to do something that would stand out from the white walls of the Fine Arts building where Craftstravaganza was held.
The backing progressed
Started off in the morning at 8am not knowing where this would progress.
By about 3:30pm I was pretty burned out and had to call it.
@micahvono ended up with the piece after the show. I didn’t really know what to do with it after the show and it was kind of an experiment. Sounds like that might go up in his workshop.
The show was fun, but I’m glad to be back home in Bemidji.
For a limited time, if you want a tube chalk full of Withremote prints for $25, you’ve come to the right place. Even if you don’t, you should get a tube anyway and share it with your friends! I’ll put in a random selection of gigposters and art prints in your tube.
On Saturday I started working on an idea for a new print. This is what I came up with:
Making the separations
It was kind of rainy and dreary all day so I was thinking about the weather and started to cut out water drop shapes and kind of started arranging them into what looked like a storm to me.
On Friday I had coated 5 screens, so if i was going to make a print out of these shapes I had 5 separations I could work with. This was kind of an experiment anyway, so I thought why not use a bunch of layers.
Each screen was exposed using the water drop shapes I had cut out earlier and then arranging them on the glass until they looked “right”. I was kind of keeping a mental note of what the previous layer looked like as I placed the shapes on the glass before setting the screen on them to expose it.
Color 1
For some reason when I was looking through all my inks to see what a good color combination would be from my already mixed color would be, I discovered I had a lot of “blueish” tones. So I decided to try and use up some of what I already had from previous prints.
Color 2
A little darker, I was thinking I would build up the colors from lightest to darkest. It’s starting to get interesting.
Color 3
F U DARK BLUE!!! The blue I used, and I should have known this would happen, was too sticky. What started to happen was after ever other pull the large blue field at the top, the “cloud” was sticking to the screen after I pulled the color, leaving a nasty mark on each print in that area. I did plan to stop at three colors, but now I had to fix the mess.
Color 4, and now it’s done.
To fix color number 3 I use some transparency film and created a sqiggle to try and fix the weird printing issue. I used sharpies on the transparency because I wanted to know if they would be dark enough on the film to be used for burning a screen, and to my surprise, they were.
I think after problem I had with color number 3 I have to build a vacuum table sometime this summer. I’ve been meaning to make one for some time and keep putting it off. Now might finally be the time.
I’ve been trying to keep on track with drawing at least once a day, here’s some recent ones.

I’m design and prepping some newish prints to be ready to be printed when I can get out in the garage and print again. This one is kind of Bemidji / woody inspired, but kind of not. Wood stack in outer space.
More later. I really need to finish the coloring book I’ve been working on for the better part of the winter before too long too. I’m about 15 pages away from finishing it; a 100 page coloring book, each page a sqiggle.
